Common Questions

What is fixed fee/value based pricing?

While most consultants price their projects based on hours, we estimate projects based on the potential value our proposed solution will deliver to your business. We accomplish this by starting every project with a thorough discovery in order to genuinely understand your challenges and objectives, and most importantly quantify the value of a corresponding solution. This allows us to provide options at varying levels of investment, and return on investment so you can make an informed decision based on needs and budget.

Why don't you charge by the hour?

We believe that charging by the hour creates a conflict of interest. It puts you and I on opposite ends of the table. If we're charging by the hour then it's in our best interest to take longer, and bill more hours. But you, as the client, is interested in getting solutions that work as quickly as possible. This creates a huge misalignment of incentives which isn't conducive to a healthy partnership. At the end of the day you want to buy solutions, not hours, and so that's what we sell; solutions.

Why can't we discuss pricing up front?

When consultants start off talking about pricing with a prospective client they're putting their needs ahead of the client. It's not appropriate to talk about price if we don't even know what a client wants or needs yet. If we were to discuss pricing before exploring what you're trying to accomplish we risk delivering a solution that isn't right for you. So, before we ever discuss pricing, we probe to get a clear understanding of your pain points, objectives, and aspirations. With this understanding we can then deliver a relevant proposal with options based on value.

How do you guarantee your work?

Our guarantee is simple. If we don't deliver on our agreed upon commitment we refund all deposits, and partial payments. Any due balance is null and void. But that won't happen because we are in this for the long run. Our first project with your company is just the beginning. During the first engagement our primary objective is showing you how freaking awesome we are so that we can sign you up for ongoing support, and future projects.

What's the typical cost to hire you guys?

As you've probably gathered we don't like to talk about pricing before getting an understanding of your objectives, and what you're trying to accomplish. That said I understand it can be helpful to at least figure out if your budget is within range for working with us. You can start by looking at our retainer packages at the top right of this page. If you're looking to retain our services on an on-going basis then you now know exactly how much it cost to work with us. On the other hand, if you're just trying to estimate the required investment for your project the cost of hiring us can be boiled down to around $250 per hour. Although we don't bill by the hour our average project tends to run 300-600 hours.

What are your client/project minimums?

We don't necessarily have project minimums, but we won't typically take on a new project unless the client is a good fit for one of our retainers. As a firm, our primary focus is on building long term relationships where we can go deep with our clients and their organizations. We want to play our role in their journey, and ultimately their success. Building and scaling a company is an iterative process, and it's hard to create momentum and get traction with one-off engagements. So before taking on a new project with a new client, we make sure there's an opportunity for a longer term relationship.

Will you match your competitor's rates?

We are very competitive on pricing considering the level and quality of service we provide, but we do not match competitor rates. The primary reason for this is that most competitors base their rates on an hourly cost plus model where pricing is based on the cost of delivering a service with a profit margin on top. They're selling hours while we're selling solutions, and so you can't really compare the two; at least not in terms of pricing.

Do you offer discounts for non-profits?

Yes we sure do; our standard discount is 10%. That said we do take on projects from non-profit clients pro-bono from time to time especially if we believe strongly in their mission. We encourage you to reach out and give us the opportunity to see where we can add value.

How long are estimates valid?

As long as the project scope hasn't changed we're pretty flexible on this. However due to how often technology evolves we'll likely want to re-scope a project if more than 12 months have passed.

When do I pay for services?

Retainers are billed monthly at the beginning of each month. For projects, an initial deposit of 50% is due when the project begins. The remaining 50% will be split into two payments and invoiced accordingly based on the progress and completion of the project.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major forms of payment with a preference for check and ACH.

Do you charge sales tax?

We do not. Since we are a pure service business there are no requirements for us to collect sales tax from you.
